Should You Become a Sales Manager? Try This First

Oct 26, 2026

If you're a sales rep who wants to become a manager, here's a simple way to test yourself:

Spend time helping junior reps on your team.

Do you enjoy helping someone work through a tough deal? Build confidence? Get better at something youve already mastered?

If that brings you joy, pay attention.

It doesn’t guarantee you'll be a good manager. But it’s a good reason to explore it.

Because management changes where the satisfaction comes from.

As a rep, you have the thrill of the close and direct influence over your own results.

As a manager, you have:
1. A goal you can't hit alone
2. A team that needs your attention, even when you're under pressure
3. Questions that keep coming when you have your own work to do

Enjoying other people's growth helps sustain you through the less rewarding parts of the job.

Before you chase the title, spend some time doing that part of the work.

See if you want more of it.
