LinkedIn Is a Rep’s Network — Not Your Prospecting Spam Machine
Mar 24, 2026There’s a quiet little lie baked into a lot of sales orgs.
It’s the idea that a rep’s LinkedIn network somehow belongs to the company.
It doesn’t.
It never has.
And it’s embarrassing how aggressively some companies try to weaponize it for prospecting.
Let’s call out what’s really happening.
Leaders push reps to “prospect on LinkedIn” before those reps have even built a real network.
Before they’ve earned credibility.
Before they’ve had a single meaningful conversation.
So what do reps do?
They start spamming connection requests.
Pitch-slapping strangers.
Dropping generic comments on posts they didn’t even read.
In other words, they burn a network they haven’t even created yet.
Here’s what that abuse actually causes:
1️⃣ You destroy future access.
Prospects remember who wasted their time. When they finally do fit your ICP or have a real need, the door is already closed.
2️⃣ You train reps to think noise = activity.
Instead of learning how to research accounts, find trigger events, and start relevant conversations, they’re taught to blast volume and call it pipeline.
3️⃣ You poison personal credibility.
A rep’s name — not your brand — is what shows up in someone’s inbox. When every touch feels like a drive-by pitch, that reputation gets harder to rebuild with every job they take.
And here’s the kicker.
The company often walks away from the mess.
The rep is the one left holding a scorched-earth network for the rest of their career.
Yes — LinkedIn can be a powerful prospecting channel.
But only after trust exists.
Only after relevance exists.
Only after a real network exists.
Your job as a sales leader isn’t to commandeer LinkedIn.
It’s to help reps become credible enough that prospecting there actually works.
Big difference.
